The Thread Continues: Collaboration And Growth, “Big Data”

Ever unexpectedly encounter a place that you thought moved or closed?  Well, recently I stumbled upon a place in Manhattan called Milk & Cookies Bakery. During this particular summer I would enjoy their soft chewy cookies, some of my favorites include: Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter or Vanilla & Chocolate crème-filled sandwich cookie (similar to an Oreo or Hydrox) Whoopie Pie.  Something about the atmosphere reminded me of the children’s book ‘Give a Mouse a Cookie™” written by Laura Numeroff and Illustrated by Felicia Bond (HarperCollins, 1985). If you are not familiar it goes something like this: brief overview.

“If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he’ll probably ask you for a straw. When he’s finished, he’ll ask you for a napkin… When he looks in the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim…When he’s done, he’ll probably want to take a nap… probably ask you to read him a story….he’ll ask to see the pictures. When he looks at the pictures, he’ll get so excited he’ll want to draw one of his own… Then he’ll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator…Looking at the refrigerator will remind him that he’s thirsty. So… he’ll ask for a glass of milk. And chances are if he asks you for a glass of milk, he’s going to want a cookie to go with it.” (Numeroff, Bond 1985)This continuous pattern of events is very similar to how we can apply one’s understanding of “Big Data” analytics and the probability of events.  This children’s story had me thinking. What would happen when a (CEO) or company executive is given “Big Data” instead of a cookie? What continuous pattern of events would occur? In looking at the circular flow of collaborations, what does it look like?  And who best illustrates the writer (communicator of ideas) and the Illustrator (visualization of data)?

In the area of “Big Data” I must say “I’m learning more everyday”. Amazed and excited about the past, present and future results that are produced utilizing innovative technique’s. In some ways “Big Data” coaches/encourages us to go further down the path of discovering hidden patterns about our products, our company, our audience, our clients and our brands. “Big Data” just as “coaches can help analyze the situation from all perspectives creating a strategic partnership. Coaches can motivate and inspire you to take that first step of action.”(blogcanadirectdm.wordpress.com,Feb, 2015)
So here is my take on it:

A CEO or company executive is given “big data” instead of a cookie.  You capture and share the necessary datasets …They are going to want to know how it fits into the big picture? Company goals/objectives…probably, wanting to know how it effects(xyz)……next, going to want share this with investors/shareholders to request more funding…..So, they probably want a complete report  including charts, graphs etc..…indicating how it will drive traffic…next, increase sells…Then, how it will affect advertiser’s…They will probably need to integrate this into an audience study…(next, market share…)…Which, leads to identifying new business opportunities…Then comes a better understanding of customer needs…leading to a request to capturing, extracting, and analyzing more data…perhaps real-time data.

There are a number of collaborations out there that best illustrate my point. You may even be an active participant in the collection of various datasets for example: Fantasy Football, tweeting texting and/or voting during events (political debates, tennis matches, soccer matches, reality television (The Voice)) etc.  The whole point of “Big Data” is to increase consumer engagement, better understand market behavior and one’s product within the marketplace.  I believe the partnership between Espn: the Worldwide Leader in Sports; www.espn.go.com and Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight Blog; www.fivethirtyeight.com best illustrates my point and the value of journalistic storytelling.

If you are interested in learning more about the value of “Big Data” and processing visual information or on a smaller scale to discover hidden patterns within your own market. The following companies can help. Google Big Data Services, IBM, SAP, AT&T.
