Cloud Computing: Do we really understand “The Cloud”?

In order to keep their relationship/marriage exciting within the privacy of their suburban home a couple decide to engage in an evening of risque adult entertainment.  To add to the excitement of this evening it is filmed using a digital video camera on the family’s tablet.

Later, the couple learns what they thought was a private moment, has now being seen by their family, friends’, colleagues’, and strangers’.  Thanks to their Cloud computing software. The video was automatically downloaded to the couple’s Cloud storage video/photo files. As you could imagine the couple was horrified questions’ like: Where did it go? Where’s the cloud? And, how do we get it down?

This is the premise behind the Columbia Pictures a (Sony Company) movie “Sex Tape The Movie” in theater’s July 18, 2014.  Directed by Jake Kasden and written by Kate Angelo Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller. The film stars, Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. Take a look at the trailer.

I mention this movie because it is a good illustration from a humorous point of view. Of what some executives’ and managers’ are experiencing while managing the transition of certainty to a Cloud computing systems of uncertainty. Something we can all relate to. Questions like: What information should we move to the Cloud? What is the Cloud? What Cloud computing system do we need?

But do we really understand Cloud computing? Unlike the movie a company is not only concern about their files and documents but also their clients.

The beauty and convenience of Cloud computing is accessibility, storage, and security.  You can access files, programs and software from anywhere using your mobile device. The ability to work anywhere there is an internet connection using a web browser is fantastic.

For companies that truly understand and can forecast their business needs Cloud computing can be advantageous.  There are a number of excellent Cloud computing companies out there. Here are just a few: Amazon, Google, IBM, Oracle, HP, Apple and Salesforce.com.
